How late can you eat in Sultanahmet?
Sultanahmet is a tourist quarter, but it goes quiet after eight in the evening. Once the museums close the street empties, and most kitchens stop between eleven and midnight. After midnight the number of places still serving drops fast.
So if you are running late, check two things. The closing time, and the last order time. They are not the same. Most places stop taking orders between half an hour and an hour before they close.
Sultan Grill House opens at nine in the morning every day and closes at two at night. The kitchen takes its last order half an hour before closing, so you can order hot food until half past one.
What do people eat late at night in Turkey?
Turkey has its own night food. It sits apart from the daytime table, and most of it is filling without being heavy.
- Kelle paça, a slow-cooked broth made from veal head, tongue and trotter. It has a long-standing reputation as the cure for a long night, and it is the soup most often drunk towards dawn.
- Mercimek, red lentil soup, taken with lemon. The lightest thing on the list.
- From the grill. Chicken skewers or köfte reach the table in about ten minutes while the coals are still live.
- Pide, easy to share and quick to come out.
- Künefe and a Turkish coffee, for when you are too full to eat but not ready to leave.
The menu runs to nine sections and 136 dishes. All of it is cooked at night as well, there is no separate late menu.
What does last order mean, and can I walk in near closing?
Last order is the moment the kitchen stops accepting new dishes. The room stays open a while longer so you can finish what you ordered. What counts is when you order, not when you walk in.
If you arrive ten minutes before closing the grill will probably not be lit again for you. Soup, dessert and drinks are usually still possible. One phone call settles it.
At Sultan Grill House the room closes at two at night, and the kitchen takes its last order half an hour before that.
How do you get around Sultanahmet late at night?
The T1 tram stops at Sultanahmet. Services end around midnight, and the exact hour shifts with the season and the day, so plan your way back with that in mind.
After the tram stops, taxis and ride-hailing apps are what is left. Parking in the narrow streets around Sultanahmet is difficult, and a car will usually leave you at the square to walk the rest.
If you are staying inside Sultanahmet the walk is normally a few minutes. Yerebatan Street is one of the lines where the hotels cluster.
Do you need a booking late at night?
After midnight the room thins out and a table is easy to find. A booking is not required.
Telling us anyway has two uses. You learn straight away that the kitchen is still open, and if you are a group the tables are put together before you arrive.

Is anything open early in the morning?
Sultanahmet is largely shut before nine. Outside hotel breakfasts, very little opens early.
Sultan Grill House opens at nine. The spread breakfast and the single breakfast plates are served from that hour. The Basilica Cistern opens its daytime session at nine as well, so the two fit comfortably into the same morning.
